If you’re wondering where to find great vegan food in Denver, the answer is Watercourse Foods, Denver’s original vegan eatery!
Along a sunny (at least it was today) corner on 17th Avenue you can sit inside or out at an outside counter and graze on some good eats at Denvers oldest vegan restaurant. Its kind of funky and so are the people coming here, a good spot for people watching.
I sat in the window with the sun streaming in and ordered the tofu scramble skillet, you can basically build it yourself choosing from a list of fillings, sides and a sauce. I picked smoky portobello, onion and peppers, chilli sauce, a side of country gravy with a biscuit (thats a scone to us in the UK), and a Carrot, turmeric and ginger beer fizz to wash it down.
As I waited for breakfast to arrive I perused the rest of the menu. Theres a really great selection of breakfast, sandwiches and wraps, salads and delicious sounding entrees, a good selection of drinks and cocktails, desserts AND a pumpkin and lavender latte.
My scramble arrived and I wasn’t disappointed. The skillet was heaped with veggies, scramble and a good drizzle of chilli sauce and underneath were the home fries. Its a big eat and a good one. I was struggling about 3/4 of the way through but determined to clean the plate!
I didn’t help myself by ordering the side of country gravy but I was just curious to try it… a creamy white sauce with sausage and herbs sweetened with maple syrup. Its not common in the UK where I’m from but here in the US biscuits and gravy is a staple! The biscuit (scone) is absolutely delish, buttery and flaky softness. I wouldn’t normally put butter on it since I was dipping it in gravy BUT since there was some vegan butter I thought it would be rude not to try it. So I did and oh my, what a gorgeous silky slather with just the right hit of salt. Just “Gosh!” it was worth coming for the scone, I mean biscuit! and butter alone.
I waddled out wishing I’d worn my elasticated pants. Hope I get back to Denver and Watercourse Foods for more great vegan food sometime soon!
