We weren’t looking for a vegan burger in New York and arrived with the intention of lunching at Blossom. A legendary vegan restaurant in Chelsea I’d been wanting to visit for some time. The reservation was made and there was much excitement. On waking next morning however it was snowing a blizzard. No really. Undaunted my friend journeyed in from Brooklyn and I rode the subway 20 minutes to arrive in Chelsea. I mean how else way would you spend a snow day in New York other than feasting on deliciousness with your best friend. We arrived to find the restaurant closed due to snow. No we didn’t get the email.
Our first course is not trumpet mushroom scallops and a bloody mary, its disappointment washed down with a quick coffee in the cafe next door to Blossom.
A quick regroup and we ended up in Bare Burger, also in Chelsea and at various locations around the city, intrigued to try the Beyond Burger that has caused so much of a hoo ha! You may have seen the videos online of people tasting it for the first time and saying “Wow this tastes just like meat”…
…well it does.
It was freaky and I seriously thought the waitress brought me the wrong order. I had to check that it wasn’t actually meat, no its definately the beyond burger made from pea and beet protein, no meat, no soy! Reassured I really started to enjoy it. This is really something, the texture and colour are so realistic, its even a bit pink inside.
If you didn’t like the taste of meat before going vegan then maybe this particular vegan burger is not for you otherwise its a must to try and makes me wonder whats coming next for us vegans. Mind well and truly blown. Oh and the best bit… a side of crispy brussels sprouts. Vegan burger and brussels sprouts. Come on!
